On January 24-25, a record number of academically talented high school students and their parents arrived at Ohio Wesleyan so the students could take part in the Schubert Honors Scholars competition. A similar record-breaking crowd is registered for an identical event on February 7-8. Students attending either of the events already have been offered a Schubert Honors Scholarship; the competition gives them the opportunity to meet other honors student, learn more about Ohio Wesleyan, and vie for additional scholarships ranging from $1,000 to full tuition, room, and board. Some are competing for departmental scholarships offered through the Department of Music and the Department of Theatre & Dance, while others are hoping for admission to OWU’s unique Economics Management Fellows Program.

Students who participate write essays and meet with professors in small groups. Those unable to attend either weekend or who registered after the events filled will be permitted to complete the timed essay online or schedule a campus visit between January 25 – February 8 and write their essay as part of their visit. Still others may attend OWU’s February 15 “Spring into College” event and complete their essay at that time.

“It was exciting to see these honors students and their parents on campus,” says Laurie Patton ’95, Senior Associate Director of Admission and Financial Aid and Events Coordinator. “I may be the general in charge of managing all the details, but there are many others who work together to make this event successful. From faculty to administrators to current students to Building and Grounds staff to Housekeeping and Dining Services—we couldn’t pull these events off without them.”

Those who participate up to February 8 will be notified simultaneously of their additional awards by text message and e-mail at 6:42 p.m. February 14. The Office of Admission selected this time because it is 18:42 military time, and Ohio Wesleyan was founded in 1842. Those who compete on February 15 will be notified soon thereafter.

In addition to the Schubert Honors Scholars Competition, additional events for all admitted students will be held on the following dates:

  • Spring into College – February 14-15
  • Multicultural Weekend – February 21-22
  • Slice of Life #1 – March 28-29
  • Slice of Life #2 – April 11-12
  • Slice of Life #3 – April 18-19
  • Slice of Life #4 – April 23
