The CROP Hunger Walk is a unique response to the needs of poor and hungry people in our communities and around the world. And the spirit of cooperation that results when people of all faiths join together is both inspiring and invaluable.

Mark your calendar on Sunday, October 4, as the Delaware Crop Walk kicks off. This is an annual campus and community event that raises money and awareness for Church World Service. “‘We Walk Because They Walk’ is the Crop Walk’s slogan, and that is why I am passionate about this event,” senior Kim Davis says.

The acronym CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. People from all faiths, cultures, and ages are walking together to take a stand against hunger in the world. It is a 10-kilometer walk that raises awareness and money for global disaster relief and refugee relocation; self-sufficiency projects in developing countries; and the local hunger-fighting agency, People In Need.

Davis says that helping communities become self-sufficient is one of the strongest ways to assist, as it is gives power to the people.

“Growing up in Malaysia and being able to travel to different countries, I have seen the reality of poverty and people who don’t have the food and water they need,” Davis says. “There is enough food and water in the world to provide for every individual on the planet; however, way too many people go without even having the bare necessities.”

OWU student groups of all types such as SLUs, Greeks, religious groups, service clubs, and anyone who cares about fighting global hunger are encouraged to participate.

Registration will start at 1:30 p.m. and the walk will start at 2 p.m. from the Ham-Wil Benes room; the Crop Walk ends at First Presbyterian Church. This event is sponsored by the Delaware Area Churches, OWU Community Service Learning and the Office of University Chaplain.
