As you make plans for the Independence Day holiday weekend, don’t forget to add Main Street Delaware’s July 3 “Celebrate Independents!” to your must-do list.

This monthly First Friday celebration will include free sidewalk games and popsicles for children, courtesy of William Street United Methodist Church.

Downtown Delaware’s many independent stores and restaurants also will be open late for the First Friday celebration, scheduled from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

During the event, people also will get their first look at some of the custom handbags being created by local artists for auction at Main Street Delaware’s August 14 Fine Art, Food & Wine fund-raiser, which will be held at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Ross Art Museum.

“As we celebrate the America’s independence, we thought it would a perfect time to invite people downtown to support our ‘independents’—those individuals and businesses that give downtown Delaware its special flavor,” says Frances Jo Hamilton, executive director of Main Street Delaware. “I hope everyone will be able to join us for this fun family event.”

To complete your must-do list, you’ll also want to add the July 4 community parade and fireworks celebration, featuring the Central Ohio Symphony’s annual 4th of July concert.

The parade will kick off at 11:30 a.m. July 4 from the fairgrounds and proceed downtown to Wilmer Street. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. in Ohio Wesleyan University’s Phillips Glen, and the city fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m., with viewing from Henry Street and the OWU practice field areas.
