Experts representing both media and academia will discuss strategies being used by U.S. presidential candidates and the effectiveness of their methods during “On to November,” a panel discussion hosted by OWU’s Arneson Institute for Practical Politics and Public Affairs.

The event will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 25 in Benes Room B of Hamilton-Williams Campus Center. The discussion, part of the Barger Family Lecture Series, also will be available via a live Web stream at stream.owu.edu.

“This event provides a good opportunity to hear the perspectives of well-known experts and to stimulate conversation about the 2008 election,” says Carl Pinkele, Ph.D., who will serve on the panel as well as moderate the discussion. “The panel will examine the tactics used by the candidates, the reaction of voters, and what it all means.”

In addition to Pinkele, panel participants are:

  • Dan Balz, chief national political correspondent for The Washington Post
  • David Brady, deputy director for Stanford University’s Hoover Institution for War, Revolution and Peace
  • D. Sunshine Hillygus, Harvard University professor and director for the Harvard Program on Survey Research
  • Gregg Jarrett, news anchor for Fox News Channel and former Court TV program host.

During the conference, each panelist will speak for up to 15 minutes, make general comments based on each other’s presentations, and respond to audience questions. Brady and Pinkele will make a joint presentation.

The Barger Family Lecture is named in honor of Richards Barger, a former university trustee, and his children, Catherine Barger Leibrich ’83, John ’79, and James ’78. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Department of Politics and Government and The Arneson Institute for Practical Politics and Public Affairs.
