OWU’s Battling Bishop outshone Louie the Lightning Bug and had more juice with voters than the Delaware Grape.

During the April 4 “Mascot Madness” event held in downtown Delaware, OWU’s Bishop captured the favorite mascot title with AEP Ohio’s lightning bug coming in second and the Delaware Grape in third place.

The Bishop, who never speaks, had no comment on his victory, but did give his characteristic thumbs up upon hearing the news.

“Mascot Madness,” a First Friday event organized by Main Street Delaware, also got the thumbs up from Donna Meyer, president of the nonprofit group dedicated to preserving the city’s historic downtown.

“First Friday was a real success,” Meyer says. “How exciting to see the streets and businesses packed! There were lots of familiar faces and many new ones who pledged to return every First Friday.”

May’s First Friday event, a “Cinco de Mayo” celebration, will be held May 2. In June, Main Street Delaware will host its popular “Artful Spaces in Downtown Places” tour on June 6.
