Science Center Atrium Filled With Fright and Fun

Ghouls, ghosts, goblins, and a mix of other costumed students, faculty, staff, and their families haunted the Conrades♦Wetherell Science Center Atrium for the fifth annual Zombie Ball on Friday, October 26. The ball was organized by the students of the departments of Botany-Microbiology and Zoology, and by the student group (Choosing and Learning Environments with Alcohol Respect).

“The event was well-attended,” says Laura Tuhela-Reuning, CPT associate professor of botany, microbiology, and zoology. “The dance is a fundraiser for the student boards of BOMI and Zoology, so this is a student-run and organized event—and they did an excellent job.”

The ball featured a costume contest, scary decorations, delicious snacks, pumpkin painting, dancing, games, and prizes—and had jams spun by DJ Dr. DL (a.k.a. Dr. Dave Lever—compliments of the Chemistry department).

“There were a lot of great costumes,” says Lindsey Saum ’08, secretary of the Botany-Microbiolgy Student Board. “It was great to see the creative energy people put into it.”

And regarding the music, Saum says, “The dance floor was full—DJ Dr. DL was slammin’.”

As a bit of trivia, the “Zombie” moniker was born from the names of the departments sponsoring the event and originally appeared in print as The “ZoMBie” Ball,  with the “Z” representing zoology, the “M” for microbiology and the “B” for botany.
